What I read in May 2020
May wasn’t the busiest month but I only read 2 books. Still better than nothing.
The Vintage Teacup Club by Vanessa Greene
The plot: 3 Ladies meet one morning at a car boot sale all deciding that they want to buy the same vintage teaset. Each has their own reasons for wanting this special vintage set. For Jenny it will go perfectly with her wedding theme. For Maggie, it will please her new client who is having an Alice in Wonderland themed wedding reception. For Alison it will come in handy for her candle making and boost sales of her home business. So they decide to share their purchase and start collecting teasets together.
What I thought: This is a lovely read which was exactly what I needed during Lockdown. The characters in the book all have interesting stories and as they get to know each other a friendship blooms. Jenny is dealing with the reappearance of her mother who she hasn’t seen in decades. Maggie’s ex-husband wants to be back in her life at the same time she’s been given the biggest opportunity of her career. Alison seems to have it all under control but then gets a nasty surprise that adds stress to her marriage. The characters are connected by the vintage teaset and it is a pleasant read.
My Goodreads rating: 3 stars
The only way is up by Carole Matthews
The plot: Laurence and Lily have it all. The huge house, expensive cars, horses and overseas holidays. Then Laurence makes a mistake and they lose it all. Told from both of their perspectives, this book proves that happiness isn’t store bought.
What I thought: This is one of my favourite Carole Matthews books. It took a couple of chapters before I warmed up to Lily but it is a good read and I enjoyed it. Lily and Laurence quickly learn that their fabulous lifestyle they’ve just lost didn’t come without a price tag. As they get used to a new way of life, there are lots of lessons to be learnt. As their old friends turn their backs on them, the couple have to ask themselves if they really did have it all. And given the chance, do they really want it back?
My goodreads rating: 4 stars
