What I read in August 2020
I read one book in August. Again, set in summer (while we had a super cold winter in Cape Town)!
The Swimming Pool by Louise Candlish
The Plot: This summer for Natalie Steele offers an opportunity for escape. The Elm Hill Lido has opened after being closed for many years and a glamorous family has moved in nearby.
Natalie has tried to be the perfect wife, mother and teacher for so long and is surprised when the Channings invite her into their exclusive circle. It seems too good to be true and soon her husband and those close to her start getting suspicious.
Do the Channings have an ulterior motive?
As Natalie throws herself into her new circle of friends, disturbing memories of a summer in the 80’s start to surface.
Memories that Natalie had worked hard to forget.
What I thought: This book is brilliant and I highly recommend as one of my favourites by Louise Candlish.
Natalie is a teacher looking forward to summer as time off to relax and recharge. She unexpectedly meets a new friend - Lara Channing who quickly envelopes her into her glamourous world. Natalie suddenly has less time to focus on those close to her as her days are filled with swimming, cocktails and getting to know Lara’s husband and friends.
The book moves at a good pace and was a real page turner for me. There are flashbacks to a summer in the 1980’s when Natalie did something awful and completely out of character and Candlish builds up to the reveal throughout the chapters. The book jumps from present (end of summer) to 10 weeks previously (the time Natalie met the Channings).
My Goodreads rating: 5 stars
