What I read in January 2020
Second Tuesday of the month which means talking books and sharing reviews.
I only read 2 books in January and neither were as good as I’d hoped they would be.
The missing wife by Sheila O’Flanagan
The plot: Imogen Naughton has disappeared. She was on a business trip and instead of returning to her home in Ireland she has vanished. Nobody - her husband, best friend or step sister - have any idea where she could be but it soon becomes clear the life she was leading wasn’t all they thought it was.
What I thought: I had high hopes for this book but it was SO slow moving! The book is mostly told from Imogen’s point of view and she shares memories which shaped her into the woman she has become. Her husband Vince and his search for her plays a role in the book but it was just too long and too slow.
Also the word ‘indiscretion’ became tedious and overused very quickly!
My Goodreads rating: 2 Stars.
The plot: When Jessica Farris signs up to do a survey in ethics she thinks it is a quick and easy way to earn extra money. Dr Shields asks questions which Jessica answers and she assumes that is all the survey will require of her.
She is wrong. Before long Dr Shields is paying her extra to do more than answer questions. She has to complete tasks which seem strange and feel risky. Since she has signed a confidentiality clause she has nobody to share her concerns with. But when things start going wrong in her personal and professional life it is clear Dr Shields is hiding something.
What I thought: The first book I read by these authors was “The wife between us” and I think I expected this book to be the similar - loads of twists and turns. Unfortunately I guessed a big part of the surprise. Jessica is a likeable character who is carrying around alot of guilt due to something happening to her younger sister. She blames herself and has never told her parents what happened on that fateful day.
She assumes that taking part in the survey will simply mean extra money but has no idea of the dangers behind Dr Shields intentions.
Dr Shields gives her side of the story and the reason behind her survey is soon found out.
It is an enjoyable read and passed the time but not my favourite by these authors.
My Goodreads rating: 3 stars
