What I read in September
I didn’t get alot of time to read in September but when I managed to chill out with a book I made the most of it.
The Mother-in-law by Sally Hepworth
The plot: When Lucy met Diana for the first time, she just knew Diana didn’t truly like or approve of her. When Diana became her mother-in-law nothing changed.
Now Diana has been found dead with a suicide note saying she was battling cancer and didn’t want to live.
The autopsy reveals no cancer. It confirms traces of poison and suffocation.
With a Will that was changed at the last minute, police are suspicious that Diana’s family know more than they are admitting.
What I thought: Oh my word - this book is one of my favourites for 2021 so far. Told from both Lucy and Diana’s points of view, the book moves from present back to the past. It highlights the years of misunderstandings and hurt caused and received by the two women.
Also the book questions why a relationship between a mother-in-law and her daughter-in-law can be so difficult. I couldn’t put this book down - I devoured it in days. I loved how Diana grew on me as the chapters unfolded. How seeing things from both characters points of view gives a reader such insight.
My Goodreads rating: 5 stars
The Guestlist by Lucy Foley
The plot: Jules and Will are a glamourous couple getting ready to tie the knot in a wedding on an Irish Coast. Their wedding party includes old friends, their families and thirteen guests. Also present at this wedding of the year are old grudges, jealousies and buried memories.
On the night of the wedding the wind picks up and a storm is on its way. Then a body is found.
What I thought: I found this to be a slow burn compared to “The Hunting Party” which I read earlier this year. Some of the characters felt similar in both books and I didn’t enjoy this one as much. Finding out who the victim was seemed to take ages.
My Goodreads rating: 3 stars
