What I read in March 2020

What Alice Forgot.jpg

I read one book in March. I know - how did that happen right? We are in Lockdown, I’m working from home, nowhere to go and nobody to see. How did I read one book? I blame the sudden decluttering and organizing spree I’ve been doing at home.

What Alice forgot by Liane Moriarty

The plot:

Alice has just lost 10 years of her life after an injury at gym. She believes she is 29, newly married and expecting her first baby. Her and her husband are renovating a run down house and turning it into a home. She is slightly ditzy but extremely content and happy with her life.

Except in reality Alice is 39, a super organised mother to 3 children she doesn’t remember and going through an ugly divorce.

How did so much happen in a decade?

What I thought:

Alice is a likable character and the book is very cleverly written. We get to see into the lives of her sister Elizabeth and honourary grandmother Frannie with simply but effective techniques. Elizabeth is in therapy and writes her thoughts in an essay style form of homework for her Doctor. Frannie shares her stories through her blog (musings of a Great Grandmama).

Alice has no idea how she and Nick went from happy newlyweds to a bitter divorce. She doesn’t remember any of her 3 children. She has no idea who Gina is or why everyone insists she was her best friend. She doesn’t know where Gina even is and nobody seems able to tell her what happened. She is unaware her sister isn’t speaking to her. Or who her new boyfriend is.

It is a good book. There are a number of surprises and I enjoyed it. Difficult to say which parts were my favourites without giving the plot away.

BUT…….yes there is a definite but here.

I did feel that the truth about Gina could have been revealed a little sooner.

I found 29 year old Alice rather naive and extremely whimsical at times.

The ending left me wondering if other readers were happy with Alice’s decision or if (like me) they’d not have been disappointed with a different ending.

My Goodreads rating: 3 stars
