What I read in June
June was a great reading month! 3 books and all enjoyable. This is what I read last month:
The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley
The Plot: In the Scottish Highlands lies a beautiful lodge with breathtaking views. It is the perfect venue to for a group of friends to ring in the new year. However as old disagreements and issues resurface, the friends find themselves having a less than ideal time.
And when a body is found and nobody can send help, they are forced to ask themselves how well they really know their closest friends.
What I thought:
I could not put this book down!
From the first page I was drawn into the cold and remote landscape. Told from various points of view and moving from New Years Day (when the body is found) to 2 days earlier when the group of guests arrive for their holiday.
The group’s dynamics, underlying issues and grievances are quickly picked up. There is tension and lot of it is to do with the fact the friends have outgrown each other. Instead of admitting this, they force themselves into a group holiday each year and this one ends in disaster.
My Goodreads rating: 5 stars
The Hypnotists Love Story by Liane Moriarty
The plot: Ellen is a Hypnotherapist who has been dating Patrick a widowed father. One evening he tells her that he has a stalker. An ex that won’t let go, follows him and won’t leave him alone. Ellen is intrigued by the mysterious ex Saskia. She doesn’t realise that she has already met Saskia who has no intention of letting Patrick get on with his life.
What I thought: Ellen is a great character - a little smug perhaps in the start of the book. But I really enjoyed how she grew with each chapter and realised that she wasn’t as understanding and patient as she liked to assume. Told from Saskia’s point of view as well I found it a real page turner. Another brilliant book by Liane Moriarty!
My Goodreads rating: 5 stars
The book club by C J Cooper
The plot: Alice is new to the neighbourhood and insists they start a book club. The main character Lucy doesn’t trust Alice from the start but keeps her doubts to herself. She doesn’t realise Alice has moved next door for revenge. Told from various character’s points of view (the members of the book club) it is clear that everyone has something they are hiding.
What I thought: This book kept me interested - each member of the book club (except for Lucy) welcomes Alice into their circle of friends. Alice does her research and uncovers each of their secrets to use against them.
I found I didn’t warm up to Lucy and Rebecca from the start of the book and Alice is quite terrifying. I found some chapters dragged a bit, the characters could have saved time if they were honest with each other.
My Goodreads rating: 3 stars
