What I read in July 2020
I read 2 books in in July:
The Pool House by Tasmina Perry
The plot: Gem and Nat Chapman are staying in New York for Nat’s job and Jem (who is lonely and missing family and friends) is excited at the prospect of doing a house share in the Hamptons for the summer. The 3 other couples are glamorous and the beach house is stunning. But when Gem asks how the space for a 4th couple became available she learns a chilling fact about the previous summer.
One of the housemates - Alice Holliday - was found dead in the swimming pool. Everyone says she was troubled and had been drinking. That she couldn’t swim and must have fallen in by accident. And while everyone has an alibi for the evening, Jem soon realises the housemates had various motives to get rid of Alice.
What I thought: This book is brilliant! Jem is a great character who isn’t swayed by the glamour and pretense of her housemates and surroundings. Her feet are firmly on the ground and along with the help of a crime writer Michael Kearnes she delves into Alice’s past and seeks out the truth to what truly happened that night.
The housemates are not impressed and Jem soon realises that there are uncomfortable truths alot closer to home than she realised.
Goodreads rating: 5 stars. This kept me guessing the entire time. Plus the story is told from Jem in the present as well as Alice living the previous summer.
The Devil Wears Prada
The plot: Andy Sachs has taken the job of a lifetime - working for the powerful editor in chief of Runway - the brilliant Miranda Priestly. She decides to give a year of her life to fashion (and Miranda’s demands) so that she can get a foot in the door and pursue her dream of journalism.
What I thought: I’ve watched this movie so many times over the years and thought I’d re-read the book. It is an enjoyable read but for once I really prefer the movie. Andy is so stressed in the book, overthinks far too much and (no matter how much she tries) manages to disappoint everyone around her while she basically loses her soul in a job from hell.
My Goodreads rating: 3 stars
