What I read in February
February went far too quickly! It was my birthday month and I took a couple of days leave to celebrate up the West Coast. Then work was super busy, the days flew and before I knew it we were in March! I managed to read 2 books and loved both!
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
The Plot: Shaker Heights is a suburb where everything is meticulously planned and rules are in place. Elana Richardson has always followed rules and one day meets a mysterious artist who she leases out the top of her duplex to. Mia and her daughter Pearl have been on the move for all of Pearl’s life and this could be a new start for them. However Elana is suspicious of Mia and decides to do some investigating into her past. She has no idea the effects her obsession with finding out Mia’s secrets will have.
What I thought: I watched the series last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. The way things are described in the book is stunning - this is my first book I’m reading by Celeste Ng and I want to read more! Her descriptions and the way she takes a reader into each scene is beautiful.
I thought the complexities of the mother daughter relationships in the book was addressed well. Pearl’s questions regarding her past and Mia’s careful editing to protect her daughter (as well as herself). Bebe’s regret at her decision to leave May Ling and her determination to get her back. The strained relationship Izzy and Elana have - fueled on hurt and misunderstandings.
Each chapter is written with such feeling.
It was the sort of book I was sorry to finish.
My Goodreads rating: 5 stars.
A good girl comes undone - Polly Williams
The plot: Annie is seen as a woman who has it all together. Stable long term relationship, new beautiful house, recent promotion - she is organised and calm and always there for everybody else.
Except her boyfriend has just resigned, leaving her to sort out a huge mortgage, her office has become a battlefield and her family are going through one crisis after another. And then Don, a mysterious man she meets at a party keeps showing up and she finds herself asking herself some big questions.
What I thought: I loved this book so much. Annie is a lovely character that readers will root for from the first page. She works extremely hard for a magazine and is trying to hold it all together while her personal and professional life is falling apart. It is a beautifully written book - funny and sad in parts and watching Annie grow as a person and learn her worth makes it a page turner.
My Goodreads rating: 4 stars
