What I read in July

It is the second Tuesday of the month which means book review time! July was a busy month and I only read 2 books.

Getting rid of Matthew by Jane Fallon

The Plot: Helen has being seeing Matthew for 4 years. He is married with a family and Helen expects that her role in his life will always be the other woman.

So when Matthew rocks up with boxes of his belongings and the news that he has left his wife Sophie, he expects Helen to be happy. Except she isn’t and realises she no longer wants him. So Helen comes up with a plan to get him back with his wife. It involves befriending Sophie, giving herself a fake name (and identity), and trying to get the two back together.

What I thought: Jane Fallon’s books never disappoint. This is another one that I enjoyed and seeing the events unroll from both Helen and Sophie’s points of view is interesting. Mathew’s family are a nightmare that provides some entertainment in a few chapters. I felt Sophie deserved a medal for putting up with them.

My Goodreads rating: 4 stars

The Wives by Lauren Weisberger

The Plot: When Karolina a former model is arrested while driving her stepson home the headlines don’t give the full facts. She quickly realises the full extent to her husband Graham’s political ambition.

Miriam (Karolina’s friend) has moved to the suburbs leaving her successful legal career behind after her husband Paul sold his start up. She suspects he is hiding something from her and it seems the suburbs are full of secrets.

Emily (Miranda Priestly’s former assistant) is now in PR and married. She and Miriam are friends and she offers her services to Karolina, determined to get to the bottom of the scandal (and hopefully save her own PR company which is losing clients to competition).

What I thought: With the exception of Karolina (and in some chapters Miriam) this book felt like it was filled with bored woman only interested in plastic surgery and living fake lives. Emily is the same bossy woman from “The Devil Wears Prada”. I found Miriam’s friends were annoying at best with their obsession with plastic surgery, money, status and how they look - the theme continues throughout the book.

My Goodreads rating: 3 stars
