What I read in February 2020

I read two books in February and one was really enjoyable. I’ll start with that shall I?

The Ex Girlfriend by Nicola Moriarty

The Plot: Georgia meets Luke one evening when her date stands her up. He is everything she is looking for and she thinks she has found 'the one'. Luke is perfect in her opinion.....there is just one problem. His ex Cadence who is battling to let go of the relationship. Luke still lives with her while they are waiting for their lease to end.

Georgia starts receiving nasty messages from Cadence. She suspects she is being watched and followed and nothing Luke does seems to make Cadence stop.
With little thought or hesitation she invites Luke to move in with her so he can sever ties with Cadence.
And that is when Cadence really turns nasty...

My thoughts: It is difficult to say more without giving away surprises (there are quite a few in this book). I admit I guessed the big one early on. I had a suspicion but knowing didn't spoil the book - I just looked at it from a different perspective. But what I suspected from the beginning then just seemed to be confirmed the more I read. There are a couple of twists I did not predict so I gave it a higher rating.

My goodreads rating: 4 stars

Somewhere Close to Happy by Lia Louis

The Plot: Lizzie and Roman met when they were in their teens. Then Roman disappeared and 12 years later a letter is sent to Lizzie. It has been posted recently but written just before Roman left. His disappearance left Lizzie with loads of unanswered questions and she is forced to step outside her comfort zone and confront the past.

My thoughts: I wanted to like this book more, I really did. But I felt it was quite slow moving in most chapters. It jumps around from past to present and is not in order.

I would have liked more time getting to know the other characters. Lizzie's Mom and Dad, her beloved Grandad who was so caring. Her brother Nathan grew up in the same home and it would have been interesting to read his take on the past.

Priscilla is Lizzie's best friend and despite going through rough times herself, her concern is still always about Lizzie. She spends the entire time either comforting or cajoling Lizzie when she herself has things she is going through.

My Goodreads rating: 2 stars
