Kgalagadi holiday part 1

For hubby’s 50th we ticked a huge item off our travel bucket list. We finally visited Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park!

It has been many years of hearing people telling us just how awesome this place is. How once we visit, we’ll want to come back asap to experience it all over again. Stories regarding amazing wildlife sightings. Lists of birds that are spotted. To say we heard rave reviews would be an understatement.

PLANNING

Hubby did all his research, found us some stunning accommodation just outside Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. He seriously planned the trip of a lifetime. I didn’t know what to expect - in fact I preferred to be surprised. And wow, was I amazed! It was worth the wait and as I type this holiday post I’m reminded with a pang just how special our time in Kgalagadi was.

EARLY START

I don’t know how I got any sleep the night before we left. We’d packed our suitcase the day before and were up early on the morning. Just packing last minute things like snacks for the roadtrip and checking we had everything.

Obviously a stop to get coffee was mandatory!

NORTHERN CAPE

We arrived in the afternoon in the Northern Cape. We drove to Kakamas which was where we were staying overnight. The journey is a long one and we wanted to have a rest stop to give hubby a break from driving. We checked into a lovely self-catering chalet

The chalets are comfortable and I loved the palm trees! I felt instantly on holiday and we had supper before showering and falling into bed exhausted.

NEXT STOP……KGALAGADI

The next morning we were on the road early to tackle the remaining 3 1/2 hours as we were anxious to see what all the fuss was about. Reality set is as we saw the first sign board for Kgalagadi as we exited Upington - we were really doing this!

Seeing this sign made me SO happy!

KGALAGADI LODGE

Arriving at Kgalagadi Lodge made me even happier! I loved this place SO much I cannot wait to go back. We felt so welcome from the moment we arrived. The Lodge is beautiful and the restaurant is stunning with a pool right outside. Delicious meals to choose from, great coffee, pretty views - what more could you ask for? The Lodge has a well stocked shop which has groceries and gifts. There is also a wine shop. We went to the restaurant for a cup of coffee and just soaked in the beautiful atmosphere after the morning’s drive from Kakamas.

We then checked into the coolest self catering chalet I’ve ever visited! So beautiful and comfortable.

THE VIEWS

The view from our patio was something I marvelled at throughout our stay. I never got tired of looking outside and seeing the beautiful scenery.

Most days we’d see this Emu walking past.

The weather was amazing, it felt like summer and we changed into something more comfortable after we got to our chalet. We then drove to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park which is a few minutes away from Kgalagadi Lodge.

KGALAGADI NATIONAL PARK

WELL WORTH THE WAIT

This was the furthest we had travelled since February 2020. All I can say is that I spent the entire time in Kgalagadi Park amazed and filled with gratitude that we could visit this spectacular place. Being in nature again, seeing wildlife and birdlife and soaking it all up - I cannot put it words just how good it felt.

It felt like coming home yet we’d never visited this place. My heart is always in nature and I think that is why I felt this way.

The weather was amazing - warm during the day (some days felt like summer) and chilly at night and early in the mornings.

This is part 1 of our holiday, I’ll be sharing more wildlife photos in my next post.
